From the museum

William Hunter’s work participates in the revival of wood turning sparked by artists such as James Prestini. Here, Hunter illustrated the method of lathe-turning at its finest through the densely packed, carved flutes of the bowl’s form, which was inspired by spiral ornamentation on decorative turnings. Ancient Flutes , like many of his works, was inspired by wind-sculpted sands, water ripples, and river currents in his native California. Hunter’s work addresses the interest in exploring both movement and nature through form.
